The summer of 1948 marked the conception of having a Joint Reserve Air Training Center in the vicinity of Belle Chasse, Louisiana. The person behind this was congressman F. Edward Herbert. The year 1955 saw the makings of the new Naval Air Station. It was re-designated to become a Joint Reserve Base in May 1994.
Although many changes have occurred with regard to the types of aircraft, squadrons and tactical missions, the main mission of the Naval Air Station, which is to support Reserve aviation units, still remains.
The Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB) of New Orleans is a reserve forces aviation training center located in Belle Chasse, which is 10 miles south of New Orleans. Approximately 1,900 civilian and military personnel are employed by this Naval Air Station. As a joint reserve base, it remains home and provides services to VR-54, VFA-204, VP-94, U.S. Air Force Reserve, Louisiana Air National Guard, U.S. Customs Service and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Naval Air Station provides Air Force Reserve, Navy and Air National Guard units a training ground for a multitude of fighter aircraft. NAS JRB New Orleans' Air Force units engage in staged mock mini-wars that happen over the Gulf of Mexico. These mini-wars prepare them and serve as their fighter training. This happens everyday for the Louisiana ANG's 159th Fighter Group and the Reserve's 926th Fighter Wing. In fact, this helps them do their services well. Their deployments to support the Operation Provide Comfort in Turkey and Operation Deny Flight in Italy were well-conducted because of that.
The Naval Air Station also manages many buildings that serve to be the training ground and serve the needs of the tenant and base commands. These structures, which come to nearly a hundred in number, are constantly being improved and added to. Despite the fact that the Naval Air Station is a highly industrial site, it still reaps recognitions for showing concern for the environment. Their commitment to recycling, for instance, has earned them some awards.
It's true that life in the military can be difficult, but the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base makes sure to provide many services to the Navy and other military members to make things easier for them. In fact, more facilities are being planned for future use. Some of those facilities are meant for entertainment and recreation. The Naval Air Station houses facilities such as a galley called Red Fish Rocks, which has 225 seats, and a paintball course. There's also a library that contains almost 10,000 books, as well as a Child Development Center. All these facilities are created for the purpose of retaining the military members and their families longer. After all, everybody has to have some form of leisure once in a while. Besides, with all the things that the U.S. Navy and other military members do for us, they definitely deserve to have some fun and take a break.
